Little Grippers Socks (Little Grippers)
I was very pleased to be asked to review a selection of socks from the Little Grippers company. Squidge is forever pulling off his socks and leaving them lying around but the ‘Stay On Technology’ unique to Little Grippers socks should hopefully mean that lost socks are a thing of the past.
The company was started by two parents who were fed up with their five children wearing socks that constantly fell down and were lost due to being pulled off and dropped while they were out and about. The Little Grippers tagline is that ‘socks should always stay put’, something which I imagine many parents agree with.
The ‘Stay On Technology’ means that the cuffs of all Little Grippers socks are coated with a “natural, adhesive silicon” which “gently adheres to the skin leaving no residue, acting as a second skin.” The product also claims to be “hypoallergenic, 100% natural and dermatologist approved providing no skin sensitisation or irritation.”
The socks come in a range of colours, designs and materials and are available in sizes 0-6 months, 6-12 months and 12-24 months. The prices for the baby and toddler socks range from £2.50 for a pair of plain baby socks to £4.00 for a pair of extra snuggly toddler socks made from towelling. Little Grippers also make socks suitable for sports or to go with school uniforms.
I received a parcel containing two pairs of Little Grippers socks a few days after I agreed to review their product. The items arrived quickly and had been packaged so that there was no damage to the items.
The first thing that struck me about the socks was how bright, colourful and atttractive they were. The two pairs I received were the 12-24 month size (Squidge is 14 months) in ‘Bright Blue Stripes’ and ‘Khaki Jungle’ which are a vivid mix of oranges, blues and greens.
As soon as Squidge chose which pair he’d like to wear first (Khaki Jungle) we started testing.
The coating of silicon along the top of the sock cuff feels soft and gentle, not remotely sticky or tacky. The socks were easy to get on and fitted well, if a little on the large size with no stray threads or loops for tiny toes to get caught in. The silicon cuff fitted snugly around the calf without being too tight or restricting the legs or feet in any way.
The first test was whether Squiggle was able to pull the socks off, which they passed with flying colours. After some intense concentration and determined tugs on Squidge’s part the socks remained firmly in place and showed no signs of slipping down or coming off. Even after several hours of crawling, cruising and a trip to the park the socks were still firmly in place and hadn’t fallen down or needed pulling up once. Over the course of a week Squidge also wore the socks to nursery several times where they survived the sand pit, mud kitchen and AstroTurf type ‘grass’ in the garden without any visible wear or damage.
When bath time came and I took the socks off there was only a very faint mark to indicate where the silicon had been in contact with Squidge’s skin. Squidge has had severe eczema in the past, requiring treatment with steroid cream but the silicon did not cause any reaction, soreness of dryness of his skin. The continued to be the case even after wearing the socks almost every day for a week.
The socks washed well and did not need to be hand washed in order to preserve the integrity of the silicon. I washed them with all of Squidge’s clothes on a 40C eco cycle with non-biological washing powder and gentle fabric conditioner. Even after having been washed several times the colours remained bright, the material did not bobble or fade and there was no damage to the silicon cuff.
After rigorous testing by Squidge I can safely say that the ‘Stay On Technology’ lives up to it’s claims and they did not fall down or come off once, in comparison to Squidge’s other socks which I frequently find discarded around the house. Although the socks may seem a little pricey in comparison to socks that don’t have ‘Stay On Technology’ I definitely think that the extra cost is worth it to not have a drawer full of odd socks. I was very pleased with the product and I will definitely be ordering Squidge’s socks from Little Grippers from now on.

Bio-Chromium Supplement (Pharma Nord)
Before I begin this review I would like to make it clear that I am reviewing this product as a blogger and NOT in my capacity as a nurse. I am not recommended or endorsing this product as a medical professional with any and all opinions in this review being completely my own. I was very pleased to be asked to review a nutritional supplement produced by the Pharma Nord company. Among the various supplements that they produce is Bio-Chromium; a concentrated chromium supplement that the company claims ‘contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels’ and also to help ‘reduce cravings for snacks between meals.’
I have a seriously sweet tooth, which I know isn’t healthy for me or for Squidge. Prior to becoming pregnant I maintained a healthy body weight, a reasonably balanced diet and took fairly regular exercise. However, once I discovered I was pregnant (and after the morning sickness settled) I took to comfort eating large amounts of chocolate, biscuits and cake which has resulted in my being overweight and unhappy with my size and appearance. Equally, I don’t want Squidge to develop my eating habits or to feel as unhappy with his body as I do with mine.
I firmly believe that the only way to effectively lose weight, maintain the target weight loss and adopt a healthy lifestyle is through a balanced diet and regular exercise and I do not support or condone ‘dieting’ or faddy lifestyle habits in any way. However, I am open to trying products that claim to help suppress cravings or that help you to resist snacking. So when Pharma Nord contacted me asking if I would like to test some of their supplements, Bio-Chromium caught my eye.
Pharma Nord’s website states that ‘Chromium is a trace mineral that is an important component of the chromodulin molecule (formerly glucose tolerance factor), which together with insulin, regulates carbohydrate metabolism and blood glucose balance. Chromium helps to avoid the ‘highs and lows’ of hunger patterns which can often lead to cravings and snacking between meals’. ‘Chromium is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein, helping to maintain healthy blood glucose levels. Chromium is an important component of the chromodulin molecule (formerly glucose tolerance factor), which together with insulin, regulates carbohydrate metabolism and blood glucose balance. Chromium makes the action of insulin more effective, and helps the body to remove fat from the bloodstream’.
This product was voted the 2014 Natural Lifestyle (www.mynaturallifestyle.co.uk) Best Supplement and has been approved for production by the European Food Safety Authority and the European Union.
I received a parcel containing 60 Bio-Chromium tablets (30-60 days supply) a few days after I agreed to review their product. The items arrived quickly and had been packaged so that there was no damage to the items. I also received a range of information leaflets detailing the research that had lead Pharma Nord to produce the supplement.
The information supplied on the webite and with the Bio-Chromium tablets directs you to take 1-2 tablets per day (100-200 micrograms) with food. The information supplied states clearly that the recommended dose should not be exceeded. It also states that this product should not be taken without first consulting a doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or have any form of renal impairment and should NOT be taken by those who have an allergy to yeast.
After consulting the Northern One (a doctor) I began taking one tablet (along with my regular medications) every morning with my breakfast over a period of two weeks. To be totally honest I didn’t really think too hard about my eating habits and almost forgot that I was taking a supplement designed to maintain my blood sugar and help prevent snacking. When I embark on a period of healthy eating I usually notice a slump in my blood sugars in the early afternoon that leave me feeling dizzy and craving sugary foods.
After taking Bio-Chromium for several days I began to notice that, although the urge to snack was still quite strong, I found it easier to distract myself from eating until the cravings had passed. I also noticed that I didn’t experience the weak and dizzy feelings that I associated with a drop in my blood sugar to the same extent although they were still there.
I took Bio-Chromium for two weeks until I started forgetting; something which tends to happen with any tablets I take besides my prescribed medications. As with any medication or supplement, they only work if you take them regularly over and extended period of time and so any benefits they did have for me are likely to have been short-lived and would have stopped shortly after I stopped taking Bio-Chromium.
Although I feel that I did notice what felt like a leveling effect on my blood sugar and a reduced desire for sugary foods (both during and between meals) there is no way to definitively attribute these changes to the Bio-Chromium supplement. Although the effects I noticed may have been as a direct result of taking Bio-Chromium, they may also be due to any number of other factors including the placebo effect.
I still have at least two weeks worth of Bio-Chromium supplements and I will definitely be giving them another try to see if they can help stick to my resolution of eating more healthily, reducing the amount of sugar that I eat and maintain an overall healthier lifestyle.
A supply of 60 Bio-Chromium tablets is currently available on the Pharma Nord website (www.multivits.co.uk) priced at £13.95. The full range of Pharma Nord products are available online at http://www.multivits.co.uk, on Amazon and in high street pharmacies (for the complete list please see the Pharma Nord website).
